Update: You think you're getting done, and then...

You discover spots where you wrote something like "Then, Eddie Roebuck does something funny" and you have to come up with something like him walking through the ship wearing a giant fish as a cod-piece because of a misinterpretation of Brianist Religious Dogma.

Almost Finished

Writing the last section of Book 08 (Part I). This is, of course, just the first draft. I will still need to go through from beginning to end and make it good. In the past, I'd go through drafts over and over again, but I am trying to tighten up things to net speed while still putting out quality product.

I am having problems with Part 2. It's one thing to do a parody, but it occurred to me yesterday that the parody part is just the setting. What's it really about? Part 1 is a straightforward caper. A very stripped down plot more like a novella than a full book. But Part 2 has to be *about* something. And my decision to focus on minor characters from the previous books has made it harder because I have to make them strongly developed character in a short period of time.

Wrote Myself Into a Corner

Working on the climax of Book 08 (part 1), I realized I had written myself into a cul-de-sac. For the rest of plot to play out (and make sense), the antagonists were going to have to do something the protagonists (our hearty crew of wayfarers) had made it almost impossible for them to do. (Without giving away too much, it involves stealing a spaceship.) After mulling different ways this could happen, I finally decided to re-write so that our heroes *give them* the spaceship. Which weakens the drama, but is much more credible, under the circumstances.

It'll all make sense. Trust me.

Another parallel

By the way, the ending of the Worlds-Apart series not only parallels the ending of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, but also the end of Cerebus. Which was unintentional, but considering the numerous Cerebus references in the books, kind of a nice turn.

Book Eight Plugging Right Along

Not much to report. Book 08 (Part I) is coming along at about 2-3 pages per day. Its form is pretty much set. It should be ready to be on-line sometime between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, barring additional life setbacks. The way it has evolved puts Eliza Change at center stage, and I get to explore her character in the way I wanted to in Book 07.

The story is locked and loaded. What has to happen now is to make the dialog work, and try to bring out the personality quirks in the lead characters... particularly Eliza Change.

Skipping Ahead

I got carried off by the spirit of inspiration yesterday and wrote five pages of the epilogue to Book 12. Set way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, in the future from the events in Book 08 (which I am ostensibly working on).

I had been playing around with two different ways for the series to end, either of which precluded the other from happening. Then, while jogging, I figured out how I could do both. Granted, there is a little deus ex machina involved, but not too much... I hope.

Obviously, I don't want to give too much away, but the epilogue is about Commander Keeler, and it is built around a scene reminiscent of the ending of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. That's all I'm saying.
