Unavoidable Delays

I wanted to have Book 07 on-line this past weekend, but modern technology let me down. The house network failed. I ended up having to buy a new router and rebuilding the entire network. Between me and the young'uns, that's three PC's, two laptops, and two TiVo boxes that all had to be reset up. The old network was called Tok'ra. The new network is called Asgard, not that it matters.

Anyway, with a little bit of luck, it will be ready next weekend. While running on Sunday, I remembered a loose thread in the plot that was left hanging. It basically amounted to just adding another sentence in the last chapter to tie it up, but I'm glad I caught it.

Almost Done!

Book 7 is now integrated. It's still rough in spots, but all the chapters are together, so the story is good to go. So that means, all I gotta do is:

  • Layout the new worlds-apart-dot-net website.
  • Read through Book 07 one more time.
  • Create a .pdf version of Book 07.
  • Create the revised .rtf and .pdf versions of Books 05 and o6
  • Publish to the web
When I put it that way, it hardly sounds like any work at all.

The Agony of Editing

The pacing in Chapters 11 and 12 is badly off. It's going to take some surgery to fix. I think 12 will work better if its written as a single episodic chapter ("The Rescue Mission") that tells a distinct story within the larger narrative. I'm not sure how to fix 11.

And I'm going to have to rewrite all of the Xirong dialog. The pidgin English thing just wasn't working. Inspired by listening to 'Radio Classics' on Sirius (that commute from Hell has to be good for something), I am rewriting all of the Xirong dialog with more of a 1940's gangster flavor. That's a hell of a lot of re-writing though.

Okay, That's better

After some re-writing, chapters 8,9, and 10 are ready to go. Or, at least, up to par with Chapters 1-7. Working without an editor means what goes on the web is not going to be as polished as it could be. I had to re-open Book 5 to check for some information and saw so many typos I ended up proofing and editing three chapters. So, there will be a slightly cleaner version of Book 5 to post on the website as well.

Onward Through Yronwode

Integrated Chapter 8-9-10 of Yronwode last week, which puts the book at about the halfway point in the story. The problem is, in re-reading them, the action feels very rushed. I wanted Books 7, 8, 9, and 10 to be faster-paced than the earlier ones, but maybe there's such a thing as too fast. But, maybe given modern attention spans, too fast is good enough.

The long and the short of it is, I'll be going through chapters 8-9-10 again.

Progress on Book 07, Notes on Book 10

The integration of Book 07 is going nicely. The first seven chapters have been pretty clean, without a lot of re-work required. There was a scene in which Alkema orders Trajan Lear to do something and then, four lines later, orders him to do the exact opposite. So, stuff like that needed to be fixed.

Now, the tough part. Some of the inhabitants of Yronwode speak a weird dialect combining pidgin English with prison slang, and re-writing their dialog is going to be a tough slog.

As for Book 10, it's been mostly a concept without a plot, but I played around with some ideas this past weekend. I don't think these are spoilers, since I am not sure which ones will end up in the story anyway.

  • There a two peoples on the planet Eventide. The Mariners and the Royals. The Royals possess devices called Anything Boxes, which are a bit like the replicators from Star Trek. Among the Royals, there is constant fighting for control of the boxes. The Mariners carry out Planetary Trade in the form of ocean-going trading ships. Since land is only about 8% of Eventide’s surface area, oceaneering is a very hazardous occupation.
  • Keeler and the Kariad will battle over the proper way of dealing with the conflicts and inequities created by Royal control of the Anything Boxes
  • I am playing with the idea that the Royals use the Anything Box to transform Queequeg into a human.

Book 07 Integration Begun

I have begun integrating Book 07: Yronwode. The way this works is each chapter of the book is presently an MS Word file. I start a master file and drop each chapter in one by one and go through and clean up the text as I add until everything is in. Then, just one long front to back edit and that should be good enough for free internet work.

I've only integrated the first two chapters, but I like what I've got. They were better than I remembered it being, and I really liked Book 7 as I was writing it.
